Big Buck Project Breeder Bucks Released Into Marengo County

Plans to release farmed deer into the wild deer herd in Marengo County—arguably the heart of Alabama’s deer herd—have reverberated across the deer world, drawing both praise and opposition—most of the opposition coming from professional biologists, and most of the praise coming locally.
Titled Big Buck Project, and having a website of the same name, the plan is “simply to improve the quality of the deer herd here in Marengo County,” said project spokesperson Hale Smith.

“We are excited about this program,” he continued. “This is a natural outgrowth of what has been happening here in Marengo County for the past couple of decades. If you go to our website, you can watch Mr. Roy Jordan describe his positive results over the past 17 years as he has been releasing deer that he purchased onto his property, free range. In an effort to enhance the deer herd’s genetic structure and possibly spur economic activity, organizers of a new program in Marengo County plan to begin releasing breeder bucks with proven trophy potential at numerous sites this fall.

The Big Buck Project — A Whitetail Enhancement Program is being led by Walter Tutt, owner of Tutt Land Company in Linden, and Hale Smith, one of his sales associates and land managers.

Smith said the project, which has never been done before in Alabama on the scale organizers are planning, was born during conversations this summer concerning results of a five-year study Tutt oversaw inside a landowner’s 1,300-acre enclosure.

“Marengo County is legendary among the Black Belt counties for our deer herd and the number of big bucks we have up here,” Smith said. “We were trying to think of ways to make it better and maybe find out just what kind of quality deer herd we can have.”

Tutt Land Company and the Big Buck Project Partners are excited to announce this revolutionary new initiative to restore Record Breaking Genetics to Marengo County’s deer herd. How are we going to do this? We will be releasing 200″ genetic Breeder Bucks into the wild all across Marengo County in the fall of 2012 (yes, you read that right). For now lets just say that you will want to keep an eye out for a Yellow Tag and a big set of antlers if you hunt in Marengo County. We will be updating the progress of the project in the weeks to come so sign up for our email updates in the form to the right to stay updated throughout the hunting season on Marengo County’s Revolutionary Big Buck Project.
